Pre-cabin (3)

This scene is quirkly like all the stuff between Pearl and Julia but it seems to work. You'll notice that at times while at the table I look away momentarily, as if thinking. In truth I would often have cue words or phrases written and placed off camera so I could use them if I needed to. Just maybe a couple of key words, never whole lines. It actually served two functions; first it kept me going in a scene on a day when I might have too many words to memorize and second, it created an interesting piece of behavior for Pearl as if he was really thinking about something. Nothing worse in a scene than two actors eyeballing one another to death.

Nancy Grahn was a very, very efficient and productive soap actress. She knew what she was doing at all times and was unflinching. I could have made a choice in this scene to openly flirt with her and bring the vocal level down, this would have been nice but I think at the time I was  wanting to avoid the traditional love preludes that you get on soap opera and so i went in an entirely different direction and more or less challenged the character of Julia. So rather than romancing her I  tried always to keep her off balance, tease her and keep her guessing. This works because Julia is a character who is very intelligent and well educated but somewhat too much in her head as we say in America. To play with Nancy you had to be quick on your feet and keep one step ahead otherwise there would be no chemistry. She is much too smart for your average guy don't you think?

Again alot of the style and structure of the scene is almost sitcomish in a good way. This really to my knowledge had not been done much on soap before and is quite difficult to do in execution. The lines and the punch lines and comebacks must be done rapidly and with gusto or else it doesn't work and when you only have an hour to rehearse and not a week, this can be challenging. But the Producers on the Show were very supportive and willing to risk incorporating this style into the Series and in my opinion its one of the things that distinguished "Santa Barbara" from other soaps. We did comedy, drama, tragedy, dark comedy,-the whole works and that is why the fan base was so loyal and the Emmy nominations were so many.
