SB clips with Robert's comments

I had forgotten about this one and haven't seen it since we shot it that many years ago. What really starts to work here is a nice and easy connection between Pearl and Julia and that connection is made thru simple listening. I made a mistake by not allowing myself to be intimate more often as this character since I was so afraid of the trap of predictable romance on soap operas. I needn't have been so cautious. This is a lovely scene between two people who are both just starting to come out of hiding and Pearl's attention with the flowers is entirely on Julia in that moment by the fire and quite touching.

We shot a lot of Pearl scenes that first year on that set, Buzz's place. The setting always afforded me the use of props like dishes, dish towels, table utensils etc. which often can really help to create a physical reality and a kind of relaxed looseness in a scene. When the audience sees an actor actually drinking, eating or interacting with simple everyday objects they instinctively and subconsciously relax around the actor because they recognize that that is something they also do in real life. An identification is established and bingo you get rapport with whomever is watching.

I forgot about this scene. The E string on the guitar they gave me to do the scene was overstrectched and out of tune so I played a ragtime, funky lick to it that would accomodate that and It worked since rag fingerpicking often tracks 1/2 note below the primary. Robin was great and present in the scene as always and so,so young. You see where I lose track of the song and break up on camera but in this case I knew it would work to our benefit and I just kept going and it did. Plus she has the same kind of uninhibited laugh I do , something more resembling a guffaw or a drunk crow crying from the top of a tree.

I love this scene for its abiding sweetness. So much of the essential relationship between Cruz and Pearl is embodied here. A. is great in the scene and captures what actors sometimes call the accidental surprise. When he said " but your boat sank, remember Pearl?" we both started to crack up but we used it in character to further the warmth and energy of the scene. It creates a loveable and vulnerable and unpredictable quality to acting when actors are able to do that and keep the cameras rolling.

I am amazed you have that one. It was relatively early in the 1st year of shooting and I was very much still experimenting with the character and trying to find comedic elements. Obviously the writer on this particular show was excellent and had a fondness for Pearl and the Pearl and Cruz relationship. The accent I was using was too heavy and the inspiration was the character of Johnny-boy from Scorcese's "Mean Streets". I made audio tapes of him after I was cast and walked around Hollywood listening to them for about a week. The hat is pure Popeye Doyle from 'The French Connection' and also Little Italy circa 77'.   Read more...
